Carson High Student Art Exhibits for Día de los Muertos, Pioneer Academy Event Celebration
The Nevada State Museum will host a Day of the Dead Celebration this weekend from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 As part of the event and celebration, Art students form Carson High School (CHS) will exhibit Día de los Muertos altars.
Admission is free for both days. Friday evening’s presentation of community ofrendas will include pan de muerto, traditional Mexican hot chocolate and live music. Saturday’s activities will include traditional dancing, music, food truck, face painting, crafts and vendors.
Additionally, CHS Ceramics 1 students will have their Calavera masks on display at Western Nevada College now through Nov. 22 in the Bristlecone building.
The art pieces created for the events were designed to remember and honor loved ones who have passed. Traditionally colorful and decorative, the altars offer favorite foods, drinks or special items that may have belonged to the deceased to help the returning spirit relive memories. The art pieces may also represent a general celebration of ancestors past, celebrities or beloved pets.
Carson High teachers include Karen McCraw, Adriane Wacker and Alisa Kuniya.
In addition to art exhibits, Pioneer Academy will host a Día de los Muertos celebration where there will be a display of student-made ofrendas. The event will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, from 6-8 p.m. in Panther Hall. Students and teachers will also offer face painting, sugar skull decorating, Pan de Muerto, cocoa and the movie Coco, trivia games and more.
