Dear Pioneer High School & Carson Online Students and Families,

Welcome back for the 2019-2020 school year.  I have listed some exciting news and updates for you to review.  School starts this Monday, August 19th, at 7:35 a.m.  Classes end at 2:15pm.  The success of your son/daughter, will directly depend on your involvement as a parent and guardian.  We hope you will check their grades and attendance on a regular basis using the Infinite Campus web portal.  Please contact our office for details.

Celebrations:
Students at PHS have been recognized for earning Honors, Advanced, and Standard high school diplomas.  One student earned an Associate’s Degree from WNC before her PHS diploma through JumpStart.  If students attend Jumpstart through PHS, their WNC credits will be free. We are proud to remind families that students can earn 9+ credits per year at Pioneer.   Contact Mr. Jordan, counselor, for more information.

Staff Updates:
We welcome back our top notch teaching and school staff at PHS and Carson Online.  We will be introducing new members to the Panther teaching staff: Mrs. Julie Spence, school nurse, Mrs. Lenae Mitchell, attendance office, Mr. Jeremy Lewis, English teacher and Intervention Specialist, and our long term substitute in the Carson Online lab will be Ms. Jillian Shufelt.  All staff credentials are listed on our school website homepage.  All PHS teachers are highly qualified in their areas of instruction.

New Campus Construction Completed:
We are excited that our construction was completed last year.  PHS now offers the addition of 2 science rooms, CTE room, a library/innovation center, cafeteria, indoor eating area, bathrooms, and a multipurpose gym.

Transportation:
Visit the CCSD website for bus route information.  Contact the PHS office if you have any questions.

Title 1 Support and School Status Announcement:
Breakfast and lunch is free for all PHS and Carson Online students through Title 1 grant funding.  Grant funding through Title 1 also allows PHS to offer many different levels of academic support through various interventions throughout the school year.  We will also have information for you during Open House, PAC meetings, and focus group sessions. Pioneer was deemed a CSI school for the previous score on the NDOE Star Rating system.  Though the Star Rating has not been released for the current year, we are pleased to announce that the graduation rate has been the highest in the school’s history for the last three years and PHS is offering more AP and Dual Credit courses on campus.  Additional information regarding school achievement from NDOE will be available as reports are released throughout the school year.  Please visit NDOE link at http://www.doe.nv.gov/.  All parents are invited to help our leadership team make school improvement decisions during the meeting on August 29th at 12:00pm in Panther Hall. Topics will include grant funding for SB178 and other grants and site based discipline procedures.

Open House:
The PHS Open House night will take place on Sept. 17th from 5pm-7pm.

Electronic Devices & Social Media:
Students and visitors are not allowed to video, take photos, or transmit these online or through social media without written permission by school administration.  Students are encouraged to use the school district provided laptops and bring these to school on a daily basis.  All other personal electronic devices are not to be brought or used on campus.  Any items lost or stolen are the responsibility of the student and the matter will not be investigated.  Personal student phones can be used only at lunch and in passing periods.  As a general campus rule; student phones and music devices should be turned off and not used during classes. Teachers have the option to adjust this rule in their individual classrooms according to the lesson and format.  Any device not in compliance or that becomes a distraction can be confiscated by staff and turned into the office for a mandatory parent/guardian pick up.  Any devices confiscated and turned into the office will be held for a minimum of 24 hours with parent coordination before it can be collected. Students will turn off phones and turn them in to staff during all high stakes testing such as the ACT/SAT and EOC tests.

Attendance/Discipline: (Safevoice Hotline:  833-216-7233)
Attendance is one of the most important aspects of academic success. Your help as a family member regarding this common problem is truly appreciated. Students attending PHS and Carson Online are expected to pass all classes and maintain good attendance and behavior.  Failing grades, habitual truancy, and failure to follow CCSD and PHS school rules may result in revoking a zone variance.  Bullying and harassment will not be tolerated at PHS.  Students are to follow the student dress code policy outlined in the student handbook.  Hats and hoodies are not to be worn on heads in any building on campus. As always, weapons, controlled substances, lighters, matches, cigarettes, and vaping products are prohibited on campus.  Students who drive to school are required to park in the PHS student parking lot when completed.

As always, we will be meeting with students and parents on an individual basis throughout the school year.  If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the school or call our office at 283-1300.  We are looking forward to another great year at Pioneer High School and Carson Online!  Please visit our Pioneer and Carson Online websites and facebook pages listed at the top of the letter for more information.

 Sincerely,

 Jason Zona, Principal
